FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Valley Community Players regretfully announces that they are closing operations effective immediately. After forty-six years of producing quality theatre for Renton and the surrounding area, it was a difficult decision that was made for a variety of reasons including the state of the local economy.

The board members would like to thank everyone who has supported this theater group over the years, including our patrons, volunteers, suppliers, talented artists and our local benefactors.

A “Final Curtain” Sale will be held on Saturday, September 18^th and Sunday, September 19^th, from 9-5 PM. at the VCP office which is located at 231 ½ Main Ave S. in Renton. Items for sale will include stage props, costumes, tools, furniture, doors, flats, set pieces and fabric.

Audition Notice – Noises Off

AUDITIONS for Noises Off - A Comedy by Michael Frayn

Audition dates: Sunday July 25th 6:45pm-9:30pm and Monday July 26th 6:45pm 9:30pm.

We are offering two different audition options:

On both Sunday and Monday we will be accepting appointments between 6:45 and 7:30 for a 2 minute comedic monolgue. Please call our office @ 425-226-5190 for an appointment or e-mail us @ vcplayers@hotmail.com.

Beginning at 7:30, on both Sunday and Monday we will be hearing cold readings from the script. No appointments are necessary.

Auditions will be located at the offices of Valley Community Players at 231 1/2 Main Avenue South in Renton. A headshot and resume is requested.

The show will be directed by Lee Paasch.

Cast requirements: 4 men ages 20′s to 50′s, 1 man 70′s. 4 women ages 20′s to 50′s.

A lawyer who is up for a partnership is visited by a school chum who lives by sponging off classmates. He blackmails the lawyer into putting him up on the very night the boss is coming for dinner whereupon the wife leaves. The sponger discovers that the lawyer’s degree is a fraud. A model is hired to play the wife’s, a dumb beauty whose attempts to help backfire. More trouble erupts when the wife returns. Fortunately the boss thinks such a devious man would make a good lawyer!

The scene is the set where Anthony J. Lefcourt, writer and director, is rehearsing his new play, a “classic whodunit” (in which all the characters are named Butler) with which he hopes to regain the success that has eluded him in recent seasons. Desperately eager to stimulate his cast to their best efforts, he has deliberately withheld the final scene of the play from them, but his patience is worn thin by the petty jealousies and romantic rivalries that detract from their concentration. In an effort to spur them on he “stages” the murder of one of the actresses, after which the plot begins to twist and turn with such dazzling ingenuity—and hilarity—that soon actors and audience alike have lost track of what is real and what is make-believe—until a surprise ending sets matters straight in a most bizarre and ironic way.

‘Bell, Book and Candle’ was inspiration for ‘Bewitched’

The show must go on – especially for one local theater that lost an actor two weeks before opening night.

A team of Valley Community Player actors was hard pressed last week in preparation for “Bell, Book and Candle,” which opens today.

“I’m proud of the cast and how they pulled together,” said director Vincent Orduna. “All of the actors had pretty impressive resumes.”

This is the VCP’s second production this season. Though it’s the theater’s holiday play, it’s not the most “Christmassy” of shows, Orduna said.

The play tells the story of witch Gillian Holroyd, played by Janna Giles, who casts a love spell on publisher Shepherd Henderson, played by Ben Andrews.

“I think she’s someone who has gotten really used to getting what she wants at the snap of her finger,” Giles said. “Everything is amusing to her and she just kind of plays with people.”

Holroyd’s decision was made partly to keep Henderson away from a rival and partly because she’s attracted to him.

“As things go on, she starts to realize she likes him,” Giles said.

However, witches cannot fall in love, and the spell leads to a number of problems.

“Shepherd Henderson is a publisher in New York in the 1950s,” said Andrews, whose recent acting has been in independent films. “He’s a straight-and-narrow, good American.”

The play opens with scenes that explain Holroyd’s secret community. Doors open on their own, lights turn on with a snap, and cats come and go.

“Because he (the playwright) was gay, a lot of people argue he was writing about his community,” Orduna said. “Poor Shep is so out of his element.”

It’s said that the TV show “Bewitched” was based on the character Holroyd, he said.

“It’s a comedy, but it’s not your traditional slapstick,” Orduna said. “The comedy comes out of the relationships.”

Lend Me a Tenor’ opens with a night of laughing

The Valley Community Players opening season performance, “Lend Me a Tenor,” is perfect for a night of laughing.

Peter Herpst, playing lead character Tito, connected well on stage with Rachel Rene Araucto, playing wife Maria. Through slapstick, awkward bluntness and marital bickering, the actors made up some of the show’s most hilarious moments.

Lead actors James Wyatt, playing Max, and Herpst surprised the audience into applause after singing solos and duets in rich tenor voices.

The amateur actors finished the show by pantomiming it in a melodramatic style, a difficult acting technique, which ends the show in a parade of laughter.

The show isn’t for children, as one woman strips to a towel and another to her slip. Though some might consider them modest by today’s standards, the context is sexual.

In the play Tito and Max are supposed to look identical in costume with blackface, but Wyatt is tall and slender and Herpst is short and heavier, making it difficult to believe. However, this doesn’t detract from the humor.

The playhouse was half full opening night, but don’t let this dissuade you from seeing the show.

The comedy, which won eight Tony Awards nationally, tells the story of Tito, a world-famous tenor, who plans to sing the lead in “Othello” with the Cleveland Opera Company in the 1930s.

Chaos ensues when Tito’s wife mistakes a fan hiding in his closet for a secret lover and leaves him.

The situation worsens when Tito accidentally takes too many sleeping pills, sending him into a deep sleep.

In a plot to save the show, the opera house manager sends his assistant, Max, to fill in for Tito, disguising his identity with the once popular blackface.

The scheme works out well, until Tito wakes up, also in blackface, and heads for the stage. The result is a slapstick comedy full of plot twists and wild entrances and exits.
